Azarja Harmanny MA has been a researcher with the Netherlands Institute of Military History since 2012. His publications include works on the Aceh War (1873- c. 1913). His research in recent years has focused on the extreme violence during the Indonesian War of Independence, particularly during what is known as the South Sulawesi Campaign (December 1946 - February 1947).
Currently, he is working on the book Grof geschut. Artillerie en luchtstrijdkrachten tijdens de Indonesische Onafhankelijkheidsoorlog, 1945-1949, which he hopes to defend as a PhD dissertation at Utrecht University in 2022. He also contributed to the volume Empire's Violent End Comparing Dutch, British, and French Wars of Decolonization, 1945–1962, which will be published by Cornell University Press in June of 2022.
